Route 33 (the Spotswood Trail) was named after Virginia Governor Alexander Spotswood. Governor Spotswood and the Knights of the Golden Horseshoe Expedition conducted a real estate exploration which crossed west of the Blue Ridge Mountains into the Shenandoah Valley in 1716.
